What's with the 3D publishing (viewing) industry?

Long a sleeper, all of a sudden the viewing industry is exploding with excitement. Dramatic new announcements, new companies entering the business, existing companies broadening their horizons, and now acquisitions may remake the marketplace. Driving this new excitement is the creation of advanced formats such as XML and a plethora of extensions, better enabling 3D CAD.

Lattice3D (see below) entered the market in a broad way after years of dipping their toes into the water, with a rich XML data output and a way to deliver highly accurate, resizable tessellations using the a resurfacing technique.

Adobe Systems, with Acrobat 7 added an excellent viewing capability for 3D to its standard, free viewer. Adobe also introduced the U3D (see below) standard into Acrobat 7, allowing 3D objects, including CAD data to be embedded in pdf files. Adobe uses software from Right Hemisphere for its viewing technology. (www.righthemisphere.com) Acrobat Reader is free. Acrobat 7 costs $299. Acrobat Professional, which allows embedding 3D data, costs $449 USD. CAD data can be embedded by converting to U3D using Right Hemisphere tools. Adobe does not see users having the ability to manufacture using pdf, but see it more for documentation, maintenance documents, and for review and commentary. We agree!

We had the chance also to meet with Greg Smith of Immersive Design (ID), which has jumped on the Acrobat 3D viewing bandwagon. At SolidWorks World 2005, the company demonstrated interactive 3D assembly procedures, service manuals, and parts catalogs, produced using 3D information SolidWorks 2005 software. The interactive 3D PDF files can be viewed and fully interacted with by anyone with free Adobe Reader 7.0 software. For an impressive example download this pdf file (756KB) and open it up with Acrobat reader 7. Click on the 3D image and enjoy! .

UGS and Autodesk, in the last two weeks, announced an agreement to work to integrate their viewing software (see the article below). The companies will work to have a smooth interchange between JT and DWF.

Below are a few paragraphs describing the recent acquisition of Cimmetry Systems by Agile Software.

So far there are many competing formats. Just above we count XVL, U3D, JT, and DWF. In addition, viewing companies like Informative Graphics, Actify, and Spicer all have their own formats. The 3DIF industry consortium (www.3dif.org), started by Intel, plans to develop a 3D standard for documentation. U3D is the result.

While you may not have heard of the company, Lattice3D has over 500,000 users at over 2,000 companies, primarily in Japan. Lattice3D software exploits the XVL format, enabling the use of large scale 3D data in an unmatched high fidelity compressed form. It typically provides 1/50 to 1/250 (better than 98%) compression in a loss-less format. Thus large 3D data files can be sent via email.readily. The resulting interactive 3D documents converted directly from CAD data, enables users to quickly work with even very large CAD file such as technical illustrations, electronic training manuals, and assembly instructions.

Lattice3D's XVL Player is a free downloadable 3D viewer for XVL data files. Lattice3D's new suite of 3D Publishing applications enable users to use, share and repurpose 3D data. The new products, Lattice3D Embed, Lattice3D Composer and Lattice3D Publisher, offer users a choice of capabilities for 3D publishing. New products enhancements include: output to XVL, to web pages in HTML, to MS Office Documents (e.g. Word, Excel, Powerpoint), PDF, HTML and Lattice3D's own lightweight 3D document format. www.lattice3d.com

What we think>> What's different about Lattice? This is the only 3D publishing software that converts the CAD boundary rep information into highly compressed surface data (using Gregory patches). To get the data to XVL format, Lattice3D's converters run within the target CAD system and translate the following data to XVL: geometry, assembly structure, comments and annotations, dimensions, materials and textures, lights and cameras, and animation. Once converted into XVL the data can be manipulated and re-tessellated remotely instead relying on the original conversion. In addition, all calculations, cross sections, etc. will be highly accurate, called high fidelity by Lattice3D. This should prove to be the standard to measure others by for vendor independent digital mockup.

Agile Software acquired Cimmetry Systems for approximately $41.5 million in cash. Founded in 1988, Cimmetry Systems provides collaborative visualization solutions including AutoVue, with well over 9,500 customers worldwide, supporting over 450 native formats including AutoCAD, Cadence, CATIA, Inventor, Microsoft Office, MicroStation, Mentor, Pro/ENGINEER, Solid Edge, SolidWorks, UG NX and Zuken. Bryan Stolle, Agile CEO, noted that "We have been partnering with Cimmetry for a number of years to solve critical viewing and collaboration issues, and we are pleased to welcome them into the Agile fold."

Agile Software Corporation, a PLM company, has a broad suite of enterprise class PLM solutions, time-to-value focused implementations, and a unique Guaranteed Business Results program. Agile has over 1200 customers in the automotive, aerospace and defense, consumer products, electronics, high tech, industrial products, and life sciences industries. www.agile.com.

Agile Software explained that Cimmetry's solutions make rich, highly specialized design information available to non-engineering users within organizations. Cimmetry's visualization tools help companies synchronize large amounts of data across multiple locations without the need for highly specialized, expensive CAD tools. The end result translates to significant value for companies, enabling them to focus on quality, time to market and meeting the needs of their customers.
What we think>> We had the chance to speak with Brian Stolle, CEO of Agile, soon after the acquisition. Cimmetry's revenue in the prior twelve months was $12 million US, making the purchase price about 3.5 times revenue - a bit pricey by today's standards. Agile's run rate is about $130 million USD, so Cimmetry is about one tenth the size of Agile. Stolle plans that Cimmetry will remain a separate company, retaining all of its employees, remaining in Montreal, Canada, and retaining its OEM relationships with other vendors. So why the acquisition? We think two primary reasons. First, Cimmetry's 9,600 customers offer a big selling opportunity for Agile. Second, Agile can use Cimmetry's software as a built-in DMU (digital mockup capability), extending it to fit more tightly with its own products.
What should Cimmetry customers do? Nothing that you wouldn't have done before. Agile has a very strong balance sheet, making Cimmetry a stronger company.

UGS and Autodesk announced a strategic alliance to enable complex product and process information to be widely and quickly shared, without the obstacle of format incompatibility. Designed to initially benefit nearly 10 million users worldwide, the new alliance calls for the companies to jointly build on UGS' JT and Autodesk's DWF (Design Web Format) -- two open, widely-used and highly-complementary formats for sharing digital product design, engineering and manufacturing data -- to facilitate interoperability between applications utilizing the two file formats. As part of the alliance, Autodesk will become a member of UGS' JT Open Program, a global initiative to support JT, while UGS will join the Autodesk Developer Network and become a DWF Developer partner.

Continuing on UGS' commitment for open systems, Tony Affuso, chairman, CEO and president of UGS said that both companies "aim to have seamless data interoperability between our products and efficient data flow up and down the value chain and between organizations. By combining technology strengths and leveraging the widespread adoption of our data formats, UGS and Autodesk will help customers -- and the PLM industry at large -- advance to a higher level of manufacturing productivity."

UGS will support the exchange of DWF format in all its PLM applications by expanding upon JT and PLM XML. In a like manner, Autodesk will support the exchange of JT in its applications with a complementary expansion of DWF-based tools. "Together Autodesk and UGS will empower customers to create, manage and share compact, high-fidelity versions of complex designs in industry-leading, open file formats," said Carl Bass, chief operating officer of Autodesk.

Autodesk DWF is used for viewing 2D and 3D digital product data for sharing CAD, engineering and mapping information. The DWF specification and the Autodesk DWF Toolkit are published and available to any developer free of charge to build applications with DWF. The JT format from UGS, a widely used format for sharing lightweight 3D product images and manufacturing information, has been adopted by virtually all of the world's leading CAD applications. www.ugs.com and www.autodesk.com.

What we think>> DWF and JT are claimed by UGS and Autodesk to together have almost 10 million users, with Autodesk claiming 5 million and UGS 4 million, although we cannot imagine this many are working in mechanical CAD. In response to questioning, both claimed that this alliance was customer driven, primarily from an OEM / supplier point of view. The companies already have plans and are adding resources to enable this sharing of tessellated (approximated with triangles) 3D data and 2D data, not for the interoperability of surfaces or solid models. That would still require a CAD translator. One would expect to see the ability of both systems to transparently read and write to either format, and be able to use each one interchangeably. Anywhere you could use a JT model (such as in DMU) one could use a DWF model and vice versa.

In the previous issue we wrote about NavisWorks JetStream products called Publisher JS, Roamer JS, and Freedom JS. We wrote the company about their pricing and they responded that NavisWorks Roamer JS costs $1150 with an annual maintenance fee of $230. This product opens all major 3D file formats and allows combining competing formats to create a single model for design review - i.e. combining Inventor and Solid Edge files. More than a viewer, Roamer JS allows real-time interactive navigation, review and mark up tools, and other related functions. NavisWorks Publisher JS (plug-in to Roamer) costs $1500 and this plug-in creates NWD files for sharing. NWD files are small, highly compressed, web-streamable and secure with password protection, date expiry and save disable options, with full author, title, copyright etc information. NavisWorks Freedom JS is free and allows all navigation modes, viewpoints and animation playback. www.navisworks.com

Arena Solutions announced a free, for the first year, version of its Arena PLM Workgroup Edition, an entry-level version of its host based PLM solution. Go to the company's web site at www.arenasolutions.com to request the free version. Designed for teams of five or fewer, Workgroup Edition uses the same on-demand PLM infrastructure as Arena PLM Professional Edition, the company's PLM offering for larger companies and development teams. The company says that with their full-featured product record management functionality bundled with online tutorials, sample data sets and full customer support, customers can go live within hours on Arena PLM Workgroup Edition. If you try it out, we would be interested in hearing the results.

What we think>> Arena's offering, using web based architecture and remotely hosted services seems to avoid the pain of developing and maintaining an IT infrastructure for PLM. On the other hand, it requires complete outsourcing of highly sensitive data, which may not be a problem with today's encryption technology. This offering certainly seems to deserve a pilot test for companies that have not yet implemented PLM or PDM systems.

Marketing: Speaking at the CIO Perspectives on Enterprise Value Conference in early February, UGS Chairman, CEO and President Tony Affuso highlighted the "game-changing" role of PLM as an enterprise strategy and innovation driver. Affuso stated that "UGS PLM systems transform the process of innovation for its customers, and what PLM ultimately does for organizations is drive top-line revenue growth through a repeatable process for product innovation."

What we think>> In the past, PLM providers have sometimes struggled with justification. This creates enormous difficulties and limits the growth of this business segment, particularly since the implementation of PLM can be time consuming and costly. Competing for tight capital budgets requires a crisp return on investment. Inherently we know its value, but oftentimes a clear business case has been difficult to make. We applaud Affuso's comments and look forward to hearing specifics form company case studies about precisely how they drove this top line revenue growth.

Intergraph Corporation leads the global plant creation and shipbuilding software markets with a 30 percent revenue-based market share for 2004, according to Daratech at the recent daratechPLANT 2005 conference in Houston, Texas. For the 12th consecutive year Intergraph also led the worldwide overall plant creation market with a revenue-based market share of 31 percent. Intergraph's sustained leadership position is based in part on revenue growth for new software licenses in key market areas - plant creation and shipbuilding, overall plant creation, physical plant creation and conceptual plant creation.

think3 announced 33 percent revenue growth for its fiscal year 2004, ended December 31, 2004, when compared with fiscal 2003, reporting $40 million in total revenue. think3's fourth quarter 2004 concluded with 68 percent growth in revenues from consulting services compared to the same period last year. Its Q4 2004 billings in the United States also increased at roughly 12 percent compared to the year-ago quarter. The company's Q4 growth was in part propelled by new or extended customer contracts with global leaders, including BMW Aerodynamics, Wilisch & Sohn, Armes, Komatsu, Trek, Antonio Merloni, AGP and Mazda. www.think3.com

What we think>> At first I was confused about the financials, since in the think3 financial results dated 14 Feb 2005 think3 showed a 33% revenue increase over 2003. But the numbers don't add up. On 2/14/04 think3 reported revenue of $35.2. On 2/14/05 think3 reported revenue of $40. That amounts to a 14% increment of 2004 vs 2003. Not a 33% increase. After contacting think3, the company explained that they changed their revenue accounting in 2004 without issuing (at least to us) revised numbers for 2003. We are awaiting a detailed explanation from think3.

Agile Software's results for the third quarter of fiscal 2005, which ended January 31, 2005, set a new record at $30.3 million, compared to $26.2 million for the third quarter of fiscal 2004. License revenues for the third quarter of fiscal 2005 were $12.5 million, a 31% increase from the $9.5 million achieved in the third quarter of fiscal 2004. "We are seeing a marked increase in the number of multi-million dollar, multi-phase PLM projects, driven by an executive focus on growing the top-line, while keeping costs in check," said Bryan D. Stolle, Agile CEO and Chairman.
