Posted by Ray Kurland
18-May 2005
Yesterday Dassault Systemes (DS) announced that it had reached agreement to acquire, ABAQUS, the privately held FEA software vendor located in Providence, RI, USA. DS agreed to pay $418 million for the 415 employee company with projected sales for 2005 of $100 million USD. DS also announced the SIMULIA (pronounced sim-oo-lee-a) Scientific Simulation Platform, an open architecture for FEA applications.

ABAQUS will retain its name and operate as a wholly owned subsidiary, similar to DS's DELMIA, and consolidate all of the simulation development activity and sales activity for the DS process centric product line (CATIA). COSMOS will remain a part of SolidWorks and focus on mainstream analysis.

The simulation software market is estimated at $2.35 billion today and is expected to grow to $4 billion in the next five years, with average growth of 12 percent per year.
